I want to start out by saying how lucky of a man that I am, I was given something that few men ever get, a second chance at the love of his life. I missed out on her the first go around, and I am sure that it was for all the right reasons and I would not have changed how things played out in the end. When she texted me for the first time I knew there was no way I was going to let her slip by again. I even told a good friend of mine within 3 months of dating her that I was going to marry her.
When I was thinking about how I was going to propose, it did not take me too long to know how I wanted to do it. First how, she might have mentioned previously that she loved photos so I figured I would schedule a photographer to follow us. As for the location, that was the easiest part, we walked the pier that we must have walked 50 times before whenever we just wanted to talk. The only real hard part was trying to figure out when. I wanted to make sure that Sawyer was with us when I did it, he is her world, and there is no way that I was going to not have him there when we officially started our future together.
Once we did start walking on the pier I had it set for the photographer to walk behind us and had told her that I was going to propose at the first bench. Small problem with that was I had not worked up enough courage to propose to her by then so I completely blew by the first one and headed to the next. Once we reached the third one I had worked up enough courage to ask her for the second time if she loved me during this little walk and of course she said yes….. with a slight hesitation as to why I was asking repeatedly. I dropped to one knee and asked if she would like to spend the rest of her life loving me. I absolutely love this woman and cannot wait to spend the rest of my life with her and Sawyer. She is the greatest woman and mother in the world and that makes me the luckiest man ever.
Our story started back at a 7th grade leadership forum. We were from different schools and were placed in the same group. Throughout the following years, through mutual friends, we continued a friendship. Time passed. College, careers, and life took us to opposite states in opposite directions.
So much changed, yet so much stayed the same. A simple text message brought back a whirlwind of lost time and unforgotten memories. A decision to take a hike down my favorite trail, in the middle of winter, on a bitter cold day, turned into something better than I could have ever imagined. Winter turned to summer, and summer to spring. Every moment we could, was spent together.
After returning from an amazing vacation out west, Mark, Sawyer (my son), and I, took a walk back in time to one of our favorite old places from all those years ago. We walked the Pier. We were stopped at a bench, allowing Sawyer to look at the ducks, as I turned around, Mark was on one knee. He asked me to marry him. I was literally speechless. It wasn’t until moments later when he asked me what my answer was that I instantly replied “yes” through fought back tears. Having the 2 most important “men” in my life there was picture perfect. Literally. He hired a photographer that captured the entire thing.
I adore the way this man makes me laugh. He treats me like a true princess and not a day goes by that he doesn’t remind me how much he loves me. From random flowers, to witty daily texts. I’m so thankful he is mine.
